i was wondering does the ring have to be a diamond? or could it be a gem such as aquamarine? what’s the tradition behind the diamond?
Absolutely not. As long as you are prepared for "What kind of stone is that?" and "Is that not a diamond?," a e-ring can be anything you want it to. (Yes, people will ask).
To my knowledge, the diamond tradition was started by DeBeers in a marketing campaign.

An engagement ring can be anything you want it to be. You can use any stone or combination of stones. I love the look of some color in an e-ring. Some people have a diamond center stone and do other stones on the sides.
The tradition aspect I could find here:
There seems to be near universal agreement after all, on the historical origin of engagement rings, or diamond engagement rings to be more precise. Many sources, and yes the Diamond Trading Company, the world’s leading diamond sales and marketing company, is one of them, concur that the tradition began in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian of Austria bought his future wife Mary of Burgundy enough carats for Snoop Dogg to remark, " bling bling my nizzle !" Since that momentous event, the tradition has spread throughout the Judeo-Christian ethos and men have spent an inordinate amount of effort, time and money in an attempt to find the perfect ring for their soon-to-be spouses.

NO, NO, NO. Your ring should be what you and your future husband want it to be. Simple. Diamonds are traditionally handed down through generations.

Of course it doesn’t have to be diamond – it can be whatever you and your fiance decide upon. In fact, about 78% of engagement rings are diamond – meaning that 22% are not. The only reason the diamond "tradition" started was because the diamond was losing popularity as an engagement ring, so the companies decided to give it an advertising boost that worked.
Personally, I don’t like diamond, so I chose to have a different kind of gem. It was a decision between my fiance and I and we are totally happy with that choice.

An engagement ring can be any gemstone you like, or none at all! The ring symbolizes never-ending love (as a circle has no beginning or end.) The diamond was not a traditional gemstone to put into an engagement ring until very recently. A diamond symbolizes eternity (as it is the hardest, and most indestructible gemstone available.)
Any gemstone would make an appropriate engagement ring. I’m not sure on specific gemstones’ symbolisms but I know that colors mean a lot. I’m not an expert but a lot of information can be found at the website that I will post below.

My engagement ring had just diamonds but my wedding band has sapphires in it. If i would have picked out my engagement ring it for sure would have had sapphire with small diamonds surrounding instead of just a big diamond. But i love it just the same. Its YOUR engagement ring it so it should be what you love. If you wanted a band with a macaroni noodle glued to it that’s what you should get because its what YOU want. Lol I hope you dont want that but thats my point it shouldnt matter what anyone else thinks but you. After all you are the one who has to wake up everyday and look at it =)
